The NEW City Creek Center Shopping Mall

City Creek Center Sky Bridge

Salt Lake City, Utah, and the entire country, is all a buzz about the new City Creek Center shopping mall. Because it is the only shopping center opening in the entire country for 2012, it is getting attention from as far as China, and we are lucky to be a part of the excitement! You may have seen the building sized ads strewn around downtown.

Thanks to Emily with Intrepid Agency, I was fortunate enough to get a sneak peek of the almost-finished mall to share with you.

After taking the tour, I am predicting that this is going to be the new “go to” place for meeting friends, hanging out and shopping. Not only does it have two levels of retails, but also two levels of residential living.

The Design:

City Creek Center was designed with the environment in mind

City Creek Center was designed using recycled materials whenever possible, and many of these materials were saved when the old Crossroads Mall was deconstructed. The plants you see around the Center were pulled from the real City Creek. Because such care was taken when constructing City Creek Center, they received Silver LEED Certification for being environmentally friendly, and is the first ever shopping center to receive such an honor.

The court outside of Nordstrom will have a fountain that shoots over thirty feet high, and is choreographed to music. It was designed by the same people that designed the Bellagio fountains in Las Vegas. This is the only part of the mall that will stay open 24/7, and will serve as a through-way between South Temple and First South.

Ninety percent of the time, City Creek Center will be an open air, outdoor mall. We all know how Utah weather is, so the mall was designed using operable end walls and a retractable roof. On days when it is rainy or snowy, the walls will come down and the ceiling will cover the mall, all within four and a half minutes, and at the push of a button.

The entire mall will be scattered with interesting art pieces. Even the skybridge connecting the East wing and the West wing has art included on the underside. On the underside of the skybridge, you will notice little ripples that look like water. This is to represent City Creek flowing from one side to the next. continue reading

H&M Grand Opening in Salt Lake

On November 10, I was lucky enough to attend the Grand Opening Pre-Party at the new H&M store in Fashion Place mall in Murray.

Fashion forward Salt Lakers flocked to the store Thursday night, and even waited in line to get a sneak peek at the new store. The helpful staff offered eager shoppers delicious hors d’oeuvres and cocktails upon entrance.

What a fabulous way to shop! Let me tell you, I was in retail heaven. I have been waiting for what seems like forever for this one store to open, and I was not disappointed at all. H&M Salt Lake City is everything I hoped for and more.

H&M features trendy and contemporary finds that won’t break your bank account. I have been waiting for this moment since I moved to Salt Lake City from Los Angeles over four years ago. And I know I’m not alone. This is possibly the most anticipated Utah store opening in recent history. I love H&M’s style and I love their reasonable price tags even more.

Salt Lake City just got a little bit hipper. Do yourself a favor and take a trip down to Fashion Place soon! There is something for every shopper: men’s clothing, women’s clothing and even a trendy children’s section! Just in time for holiday shopping…

Fashion Place Mall is located at 6191 S State Street in Murray, Utah.

Halloween Has Arrived At Gardner Village

WitchThe witches have landed at Gardner Village, which means the official start of the Halloween season in Salt Lake City! Below are fun events going on this Fall at Gardner Village:

(All images courtesy of the author. Video at the bottom courtesy of Gardner Village.)

Witch Scavenger Hunt
This is a great anytime family activity. Wandering through the village and finding all of the witches is one of our favorite Fall activities. The village is decorated for fall with pumpkins, witches, and corn stalks. This is a great activity to get you in the mood and excited for Fall and Halloween. You can download the witch scavenger hunt, find all of the witches, and when completed turn it in at the Naborhood Bakery to get a 99 cent cookie for only 35 cents. My favorite are the pumpkin chocolate chip, or the pumpkin decorated sugar cookies.

Witches Night Out
If you have never been to Witches Night Out, you are definitely missing out! Get a sitter for the kids, gather your witchy girlfriends, and dress up in your best witch costume and hat. Enjoy a night of dancing with the Gardner Village resident witches and witch royalty, as well as other sister witches. Fortune telling, witch cackling, and a witch parade are just a few of the enchantments you will find on this night of all nights. This party flows throughout the entire village. Happening Friday, October 14th from 6pm to 10pm, and Saturday, October 15th from 6pm to 10pm. Parking is only $5 per vehicle, and admission is free! You can also now take TRAX to get to Gardner Village! (Because of the large crowds of people for this event, these are the only nights there is a parking fee. Parking is free any other day of the year.)

Breakfast With A Witch
Gather your little ones and enjoy a delicious breakfast with the Gardner Village witches. This is one of my kids’ favorite activities all year long, and something they look forward to. The witches will mingle with you while signing autographs, casting spells, and singing songs. You can purchase tickets on the Gardner Village website. Breakfasts are available on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from October 1st to October 29th. The Gathering Place at Gardner Village is where this magical event takes place. continue reading

Summer Fun At Gardner Village

PhotobucketIt’s summertime, and Gardner Village is where you can find summer fun!

Gardner Village, located in West Jordan, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Over 130 years ago, Archibald Gardner built a flour mill. That  flour mill today is now known as Archibald’s Restaurant, and you can still see the big water wheel just outside the restaurant. As you walk inside the restaurant, you will see pictures of Gardner Village in the early days when it operated as a flour mill. Each shop is a historical building relocated to Gardner Village from elsewhere in the state of Utah. Make sure to stop at each shop and read where that specific building came from, and its part in Utah’s history.

Salt Lake City Farmers Markets

The big Downtown Farmer’s Market in Salt Lake starts this Saturday, June 11th!  Strolling through the market is a favorite ongoing event for many locals during the summer months in Salt Lake. Fresh produce, beautiful flowers, free tastings, and lots of animated dogs leading their owners around the market. Some ‘musts’ at the Downtown Farmer’s Market include the sun dried cherries, the honey butter from Knight Family Honey, the fresh pasta from Nu Nooz (get their early for this one), and all of the seasonal produce.

For a list of what’s in season right now and may be at the market this Saturday, there is a post here on Seasonal Produce in Utah. The Downtown Farmers Market runs Saturdays from 8:00am-1:00pm at Pioneer Park through Oct. 22.

There are several other farmers markets popping up around the valley to also get excited about.  Wasatch Front Farmers Market is located at Wheeler Farm in Murray every Sunday from 8am to 1pm.  This market runs from June 12 to September 16th.  Wasatch Front Farmers Market is also hosting a market at HeeHaw Farms in Pleasant Grove on Fridays starting July 8th from 3-7pm.

Other neighborhoods around the valley have some pretty decent markets for fresh produce. The Sugar House Farmers Market opens July 8th and was pretty minimal last year but a good spot to grab fresh produce on the go. The 9th and 9th Farmer’s Market was even less than minimal last year but a fun excuse to walk around the neighborhood.  Maybe they’ll be better this year. And there’s the South Jordan Market, which is also quite nice.

Caputo’s Market also has a really great Locavore Market but their summer hours have yet to be announced.

Outside of Salt Lake, there is also the Ogden Farmer’s Market which is open July 9th through September 24th and the Provo Farmer’s Market, which opened June 4th and closes October 29th.

Eat fresh, eat local, and try some new foods this summer.  Here are a two fun ideas for farmer’s market meals:

Roasted Beet and Hazelnut Salad over Arugula

Fresh Corn Polenta with Local Sausage, Chard and Oyster Mushrooms

The Gateway Mall

The Gateway shopping center attracts many people from all of Utah, as well as neighboring areas such as Idaho and Wyoming. As a former student from Utah State University, I knew many people - including myself - who would travel 3 hours south to Salt Lake just to shop downtown at The Gateway.

The Gateway has several shops that you cannot find anywhere else in Utah, such as Z Gallerie, Sur La Table, Urban Outfitters, Abercrombie & Fitch, and the Apple store. (And to be honest going to an Apple store is an experience in itself. The atmosphere and all the great technology will blow you away.)

I love shopping at The Gateway. There are over 100 stores, including apparel, technology, kitchen and home, and outdoor goods. They also have retailers for wedding dresses, jewelery, salons, and much more. Along with all the shopping, there is a lot more to experience at Megaplex 12 (a movie theatre with twelve screens,) Clark Planetarium, the Discovery Gateway Children’s Museum, and the 2002 Olympic Legacy “Dancing Waters” Fountain. And after you have had all the shopping and exploring that you can handle, The Gateway is also home to several restaurants, ranging from steaks and sushi to ice cream and cookies.

Anything you could want from a shopping center can be found at The Gateway. Go for a few hours or all day – you will not be disappointed in your experience. TRAX light rail stops right outside The Gateway, located downtown in the free fare zone.

Whole Foods and Sunflower Market

Lots of good things are happening in Salt Lake’s food scene.

I’m particularly stoked about two new markets: Whole Foods opens at Trolley Square on March 14th and Sunflower Market is opens a few blocks away the following day. Two of my favorite places to go for groceries.  If you’re like me, you enjoy perusing fine groceries like some do clothes or jewelry. I could spend countless time gazing over the shelves of spices, or bulk grains. Slightly weird, maybe, but I love food and especially love the creativity behind packaging and unusual products.

Whole Foods’ new location will be on 700 East and 500 South inside Trolley Square mall. From the looks of the exterior, it will be huge, with rows and rows of fresh produce and healthy options. What I love about Whole Foods is the variety of offerings. I know I can find difficult-to-find ingredients. Plus, I love the fresh foods area, where you can create you own salad, or choose from a variety of fresh soups. I hear they are even having a official cookie for this location, Ruby Snap’s Janet shortbread cookie. Ruby Snap is a local bakery that created this cookie especially for this new location of Whole Foods.

Sunflower Market is also a favorite shopping location of mine. They are opening their new location on 700 East and 200 South. Sunflower Market’s affordable produce is hard to resist. Every Wednesday they have double deals and shoppers can use the discounts from the week before as well as the current week. You can view the deals online or pick up a paper in store. I get most of my produce here and am excited to have a location a bit closer to home.

In other news, there is a new indoor Winter Farmers Market on State Street selling fresh produce, grass fed beef, and other local products.

SLC’s Best Shopping Malls

Some people love it and some people loathe it, but just about everybody has to shop. Fortunately, the Salt Lake area has five major shopping malls where you can satisfy all your acquisitional needs and desires.

Four of the five: Trolley Square, Fashion Place, Valley Fair and South Towne Center, are undergoing or have recently undergone expansion and renovation, so Salt Lake shoppers have more choices than ever.

And, along with The Gateway outdoor center, the City Creek Center will be located in downtown Salt Lake, opening in 2012.
