The Grand America Hotel and Afternoon Tea

The Sassies were invited to spend a weekend at The Grand America Hotel…did we enjoy it? Visit SassyScoops.com to find out.

The Sassies were invited to spend the night at Salt Lake City’s only five diamond hotel, The Grand America Hotel. Generally my hotel experiences consist of places that CSI employees would usually investigate due to stabbings, so staying at The Grand America Hotel was like going from shopping at the local dollar store to Saks 5th Avenue.

The Grand America Hotel is located right in the heart of downtown Salt Lake. The hotel was inspired by European “boutiques” and has the “allure of Old World craftsmanship.” The hotel boasts 775 rooms and suites, ranging in size from 700 square feet to the 2,000 square feet of the Presidential Suite. All rooms and suites offer Italian marble bathrooms, complimentary Wi-fi (a girl’s gotta be able to check The Hoff fan page at all times), dual vanities, lighted cosmetic and shaving mirrors, down pillows and comforters, and plush bathrobes. Don’t tell my Snuggie I said this, but even it was a bit jealous of the robes. continue reading

Larry King attends Salt Lake Convention

larry-king-photoLast week the Salt Lake Convention Center hosted the Usana corporation for their annual convention.  Based in West Valley City, Utah, Usana is a multi-level marketing company that has worked with the Convention Center to host many of its meetings over the years as they’ve grown in size, not only as a company but also as a convention.

Banners were flown downtown and throughout the convention center as nearly 10,000 people arrived from all over the globe, including one special guest. continue reading

Downtown Still Rising

downtown-rising-corner-buildingIf you’ve not been paying much attention to the downtown skyline, things have been changing at a steady pace.

Since the Downtown Rising development and City Creek Center (City Creek is part of the entire Downtown Rising project) is right across the street from us here at the Salt Lake Convention Center, we tend to notice the view from our windows changing each day. What I thought would be smaller buildings have turned out to be quite tall.

With respect to that I did a little digging around in the photo files from earlier this year and came up with these photos taken on the corner of West Temple and South Temple looking south east.  continue reading

Salt Lake Airport Named Best in the Nation

travel-leisure-best-2009Getting and out of Salt Lake International Airport has always seemed pretty easy for me in the past when I’ve traveled be it summer or winter. Nothing can sour a vacation or business travel quite like sitting on the tarmac for an hour waiting to depart or to arrive and I can’t recall that happening to me more than once in recent years.

When it comes to flyiing in and out of Salt Lake, it appears that I’m not alone in thinking it’s pretty easy. Travel and Leisure magazine came out with their “Best of the World” lists and Salt Lake City took the number one spot for Airports in Nation, gathering up the top spot in part thanks to having the least amount of flights with less than 15 minute delays. continue reading

Sushi Downtown at Ginza

ginza-salt-lake-city-sushi-outsideI picked my mom up from the airport the other day and headed towards downtown to grab some eats and enjoy some time to catch up. It was just past 1pm and both of us were starving but what to eat?

After realizing that both of us favor sushi and our spouses don’t really care for it I was in a bit of a quandry as to where.  I do enjoy Happy Sumo, especially on a nice afternoon when you can sit on the patio but it was a bit warm and I was thinking of trying somewhere else.  So I texted a SLC foodie friend and simply asked:

Got a good Sushi recommendation in Salt Lake? continue reading

Vosen’s Bread Paradise

Vosen's Bread Paradise in Salt Lake CityIf you’ve spent any time in downtown, particularly on 2nd south, like me you’ve likely walked past the old looking yellow two story home turned German bakery more times than you can remember. But have you been inside?

On my way to the Outdoor Retailer Show Summer Market this morning I was again walking past Vosen’s Bread Paradise but this time I stopped.

I’m not sure if it was the intrigue of this old building finally getting the most of my curiousity, the fact that it is a German bakery in downtown Salt Lake, or perhaps due to my lack of eating breakfast, but I deviated from my OR show beeline and walked into the quaint bread shop. I’m not sure I’ll have the strength to ever walk by again without heading inside. continue reading
